Married to the Military Monday-USO

For this weeks edition of Married to the Military Monday, I am going to tell you about the USO. I have mentioned the USO in previous posts, but have never actually explained who they are, and what they do. The USO stands for United Service Organizations, Inc. They are a non-profit organization. They provide several recreational services to the U.S. military and have programs in over 100 centers worldwide. The USO was founded in 1941 in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide morale and recreation services to U.S. uniformed military personnel. Since 1941, the USO has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD).They get most of their funding from private contributions, and the DOD, who provides funds and services. They are not considered as a government agency.

In World War II the USO became like a home to the G.I.'s. That is where the troops were entertained, and where they relaxed. The USO club was a place to go for dances and social events, for movies and music, for a quiet place to talk or write a letter home, or for a free cup of coffee and an egg. Although the USO still continues the tradition of entertaining the troops, some of the forms of entertainment have changed, and some have been added over the years.

Forming the USO was one of the many ways the nation had come together to support the war effort. It was disbanded in 1947, and revived in 1950 for the Korean War. After that, it also provided peacetime services. Sometimes, during the Vietnam war, the USOs were located in combat zones.

The USO became famous for its live performances. They were called Camp Shows. The entertainment industry helped boost the morale of its servicemen. The USO also brought Hollywood celebrities and volunteer entertainers to perform for the troops. Hollywood really wanted to show its patriotism, and a lot of big names joined in to be USO entertainers. They entertained in military bases both at home and overseas, often placing their own lives in danger by traveling or performing under hazardous conditions.

The USO has over 160 locations around the world in 11 countries (including the U.S.) and 23 states.

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In

I missed Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-In on Friday, but I'm still linking up to Wife of a Sailor today.  It's a great way for Military Spouses to get to visit each others blogs and get to know about each other. Each week Wife of a Sailor posts five questions for us to answer. We post them on our blog, and then go link-up to Wife of a Sailor's blog. Here are the five questions, and my answers this week:

1.What is the best gift you have ever received or given? from Jessica Lynn Writes I just really like homemade and handmade gifts...there is nothing that could compare to some of those that I have received over the years. They are thoughtful and wonderful.

2.Do you celebrate holidays differently when your loved one is deployed/gone or do you keep tradition? from The Albrecht Squad We still try to stick to most of our holiday traditions. If he will be gone for Christmas, I send his wrapped gifts with him in a separate bag. Then, he already has them on Christmas Day. This way, if there are delays in the mail system, or if he is some where that he can't receive mail, he is not left with nothing on Christmas. I still lay his stocking out for him on Christmas Eve and Santa fills it for his return. We all try to put on a happy face during the holidays he is missing, but there is always a little sadness that finds it's way into the air. Of course, I am always secretly holding on to the hope of a phone call....and that definitely cheers up the day!

3.If you celebrate Christmas, do you put an angel, star or something else on the top of your tree? There is a multi-colored star on our tree.

4.What are your three favorite websites? My three favorite websites..hmm...can I say my own? : ) Well, if I don't say that then I will say...I'm only kidding...I really don't have a favorite. I like visiting other peoples blogs. I like a lot of educational websites that help me with teaching. I like to visit the Ghost Hunters website and Catster...you'll find my kitty babies there...I don't do a lot of web searching, but when I do have the time I don't visit anything out of the ordinary for myself.

5.On your man do you prefer… boxers, briefs or boxer briefs? Or commando? (yeah, I’m starting to get desperate for questions!) Boxer Shorts for sure....♥

Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-In

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In

It's time for the MilSpouse Friday Fill-In. I am linking up with Wife of a Sailor. It's a great way for Military Spouses to get to visit each others blogs and get to know about each other. Each week Wife of a Sailor posts five questions for us to answer. We post them on our blog, and then go link-up to Wife of a Sailor's blog. Here are the five questions, and my answers this week:

1)If you were given $1,000 right now, how would you spend it? I wouldn't spend it. I would put it in the bank.

2)If you had to choose a movie title (a real one that already exists) for your life story, what would it be? Well, in my "younger days" I have to say "Carrie" first. That was followed "The Breakfast Club." Now, it is more like "50 First Dates."

3)If you were a teacher, what subject would you like to teach? I am a certified elementary school teacher.

4)Has being a MilSpouse changed how you view holidays or how your holidays are celebrated? If so, how? If not, what hasn’t changed? It's not just being a MilSpouse that changes the way I view the holidays, my views changed when I got married. However, being a military spouse means that my husband is not always home for all the holidays. For instance, this year, we visited my husband on the ship for Thanksgiving. Then, on Friday, we had the "real" Thanksgiving. No one cared about the fact that it was Friday...it was our Thanksgiving, and we loved it. So, I guess the one thing that has changed the most is that now I see that no one can tell you when to celebrate your holidays...the magic happens as long as you're all together.

5)What is your favorite Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) memory? Growing up, spending Christmas at my Grandmother's house is what made Christmas special. Finding what Santa left me and sharing it with my siblings was so much fun. Now, I still love Santa and making new memories every year. I'll tell you something else that meant a lot to me...even though we weren't together for Christmas, my husband made a DVD of himself opening his Christmas gifts. He talked to all of us individually, and we really enjoyed having that!

That's all for this weeks edition of Mil-Spouse Friday Fill-In. Tune in next time! Enjoy your weekend! (c:

The Factor Tree

Have y'all heard about The Factor Tree? It is a supplementary math program that helps students reach their potential in the subject. The Factor Tree adapts to your elementary childs math progress. This program is designed to help your child learn through repetition and practice. As your child works through the progam, The Factor Tree will provide you with reports and notifications about your child's progress.

As a BzzAgent, I am very happy to be able to use and review The Factor Tree in my homeschool curriculum. I will be writing another post in the near future that let's you all know how much we have learned and gained from using this program.

If any of you would like to try out this program with us, now is your opportunuty to try it for free! If you're interested but not quite sure, you will be able to access the "Learn More" tab at the top of the page to find out anything that I haven't told you here.

Be on the look-out for the update about my thoughts on the program. If any of y'all try it along with us,or have used this program, I would love to read your updates and thoughts about it too.

Wendy's-Free Natural Cut Fries

I'm not big on fast food, but I am big on FREE. Click here to print a coupon, (or two!) to get Wendy's new Natural-Cut Fries With Sea Salt for free. I printed my coupon tonight and it doesn't expire until the 31st of December.
