Maintaining Healthy Finances

This deployment is almost over. Just like past deployments, I have saved money and continued to use coupons whenever the right ones for me are available. There have been a few times that I have splurged and stopped by Sonic, and I even ordered pizza once. It's not that I regret doing those things, but I do have a hard time spending money. When we got married, we were all ready in debt. As my husband and I were dating, he would take me out to dinner...a lot. That probably explains why I am not big on going out to eat now. Anyhow, every time, my then boyfriend, went to pay for all those dinners, he would have a card swiped. At the time, I thought it was a debit card...I would find out much later, that it was indeed a credit card...and not just one of them. He had three!

It wasn't until much later that I realized I was marrying into so much debt. It took us even longer to pay it off. Years later, I can gratefully say we have a much better credit score than we did when we were first married. I have managed to stay out of "bad debt," but it takes a lot of work on my part.

Last week, I went to the Victoria's Secret Semi-Annual Sale. Every time I have ever been there, they offer me their Angel's Card. It is a store credit card that you can use there, or at Bath & Body Works. I always turn them down, and tell them that I might get it later. They always tell me the same thing too...that it won't go against my credit if I don't qualify. It is tempting, but a credit card is not for me right now. I have thought about getting a store credit card, and maintaining the payments on it, just to build my score. My husband doesn't think that's a bad idea. He knows I will pay it just like I would if I was using cash.

Being in the military, it is important to maintain good credit. In fact, they will kick you out if you are not handling your finances properly. The FFSC (Fleet and Family Support Center) offers free financial classes for active duty and their dependents. I have went there and worked with a financial counselor. They helped me work out a budget, and told me how I can obtain my free credit score. I was nervous about doing that. I don't suppose I am the first person to be nervous when finding out those numbers. The FFSC financial counselors also gave me some good advice. They told me that there are three major reporting places that I should seek when obtaining my credit reports; and that I should not use all those places at once. Apparently, you can receive copies from these places once a year, so they said that I should use one of the three major places quarterly. I like that advice. When I was giving financial advice at one of our FRG (Family Readiness Group) meetings, I gave the same advice to the women at the meeting.

I am happy that we are now much more soundly aware of our finances. My husband leaves the finances to me, and he knows that I will keep them healthy. He knows that I replace all my unmentionables at the Victoria's Secret Semi-Annual Sale, and he's okay with that. Every once in a while, I splurge on him too. :)

Kara Was There

Guest post of the week by Brittany Booker

Moving to a new city was tough, but since my best friend Kara already lived there, that softened the blow a little bit. Kara was able to point us in the right direction when it came to homeowner’s insurance and a lawn maintenance guy and she told my husband and I about HOME-Alarm-Systems.COM as well. It’s been great having her here to introduce us to her network and because of Kara, I don’t think we’ll have any trouble at all finding a new group of friends. My husband and I love our new house and I can’t say enough good things about Texas already, so I’m really excited for the next few years here! Where we move is always up to the higher-ups at my husband’s job but as long as we’re together, both of us are happy. Well, that is, us together in addition to our lab mix, Corkie! Neither of us would go anywhere without her, even if it was the greatest city in the world!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In

 MilSpouse Friday Fill-In

It's that time again...I am linking up with Wife of a Sailor. It's a great way for Military Spouses to visit each others blogs and get to know about each other. Each week Wife of a Sailor posts five questions for us to answer. We post them on our blog, and then go link-up to Wife of a Sailor's blog. Here are the five questions, and my answers this week:

1) Are you a different person than you were five years ago? submitted by Sisterly Thoughts
I think I am a different person than I was five years ago. I have become much more relaxed with this whole "military thing." I mean, if he's home... he's home...If he's not...he's not. I've gotten much better at fixing things, and situations on my own. On the other hand, my tolerance level of handling a bunch of bull-hockey as since depleted. I just don't put up with as much of it as I use to. I suppose, as my Daddy says, I am getting closer to the age of "old-age and treachery." :)

2) If you could go on Amazing Race, who would you take with you as your partner and why?
submitted by Thoughts from a Poekitten
This is an easy one! I would definitely take my husband! Working with him is like not working at all. We have so much fun when we work together. We make great team partners. The time always seems to ease by. Yeah, we would rock that show!

3) Does Facebook or Twitter actually bring more stress or good in to your life?
submitted by Just an Arizona Girl
Well, I was very hesitant to branch out to Facebook. I was weary that some kind of drama would rear it's
ugly head...and, I was right. Recently I discovered the very ugly side of Facebok. For several days, I let it get to me. Then, I remembered that I am in control of my own life, and I took care of the pests. :)

4) June is National Soul Food Month- what’s your soul food? submitted by NH Girl Displaced
You know, I could name a lot of stuff, but I'm going to go with what first came to mind...Red Beans and Rice, Turkey Kielbasa, and a biscuit!

5) If you could live in any other era than the current, which one would it be & why?
submitted by Sugar in My Grits
As an adult, I am going to go with the days of "Bewitched." That would be the mid-sixties, to the early seventies. I think that would be nice.
